(The) “main point of the illustration is communication with the viewer. My job is to tell him a story which would not leave him cold. This is really challenging, because I have no sequence of words, like in texts, or sequence of frames, like in animation, in my toolbox. I must place the whole story in one picture, using visual language. I believe that mastering this language is key to success in illustration.”

How is it done?
Nikita Solovyov creates his art in two stages. At first, he comes up with a kind of screenplay for the illustration. This is the most complicated but the most exciting part of the creative process – the initial preparation stage, development of the plot that he’s trying to realize in the illustration. When working on his drawings, it’s essential for him to make sure that the audience enjoys both the story, shown in pictures and the technique applied to tell this story.

Then, once the concept is refined and it’s clear how further changes will be implemented, he moves to the second stage – rendering. It’s a more technical part of a job where color, light and different details of the character are being taken care of.
